Planning to spend budget friendly 5 days in Tokyo? This super cool city blends futuristic architecture with ancient temples, offering endless activities for every type of traveler. This was my second time in Tokyo as I had been before along with other cities too and wrote about Japan 3 weeks itinerary and I can share right now, this Tokyo itinerary will skip that annoying queueing up places. I am there to explore so I am not about to spend hours lining up to see skyline which I could see from some place else. Anywho, from the bustling streets of Shibuya to the peaceful gardens of the Imperial Palace, this 5 days in Tokyo itinerary will help you explore Tokyo’s best attractions, hidden gems, and culinary delights on a budget. Visiting second time in Tokyo felt like it was big brother of South Korea as was it was my recent travel to Asia. Anyway, whether you’re into shopping, history, or unique cultural experiences like visiting sumo stables or trying traditional tea ceremonies, this itinerary ensures you make the most of your time in Tokyo.
How to Spend 5 Days in Tokyo Itinerary
For accommodation, I recommend using booking.com and sorting with price, then consider the ones with highest reviews plus within 1km of center/old town.

Before diving into your 5 days in Tokyo, here are some tips to help you prepare:
- Why you should visit: Tokyo offers a vibrant mix of modernity and tradition, from towering skyscrapers to serene temples.
- Don’t miss: Sensoji Temple, Shibuya Crossing, Meiji Shrine, and Tokyo Skytree.
- Best way to get around: Use Tokyo’s efficient subway system- can purchase on the spot/ takes cards/ local cash, can buy daily or 24 hours pass or use Uber or JR trains for getting around. Purchase a Suica card or JR Pass if staying.
- Best time to visit: March to May (for cherry blossoms) and September to November (for pleasant weather and autumn colors).
- Insider tip: Many restaurants in Tokyo have English menus, but it’s helpful to download a Google translation app if you’re venturing off the beaten path.
- Highlights: Shopping in Harajuku, wandering around Akihabara for anime and electronics, and dining on sushi at Tsukiji Outer Market.
Day 1: Dive into the Heart of Tokyo’s Vibrancy

Start your day with a traditional Japanese breakfast
Begin your Tokyo adventure by enjoying a wholesome Japanese breakfast at a local café or ryokan. Visit a traditional restaurant like Tsukiji Sushiko for a sushi breakfast or opt for a Japanese-style set breakfast at an izakaya, which typically includes rice, grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. Harajuku is a district famous for its quirky fashion scene and delicious eats. Stop by one of the trendy cafés, such as the vibrant Café Reissue, known for its latte art, or indulge in a crepe from one of the many street vendors.
Visit Takeshita Street and Omotesando
After light lunch, delve into the local fashion culture by visiting Takeshita Street, famous for its quirky boutiques, unique accessories, and vibrant street style. Conclude your first day with a traditional izakaya experience. Choose an izakaya like Uomura in Shibuya or Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku, where you can enjoy grilled skewers, sashimi, and an assortment of small tapas-style dishes. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in Tokyo’s lively dining scene and unwind with some sake.

Wrap up the day with a meal at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, a shopping mall with a variety of dining options. Opt for a Japanese buffet or a sushi bar and enjoy a variety of dishes with an ocean view and then join a Tokyo pub crawl to end the night! Always checking opening hours of the mall as of writing in 2024 it is open till 8pm on weekdays & 9pm on weeknights.
Alternatively, Dinner at a Teppanyaki restaurant

Teppanyaki, a style of cooking where skilled chefs prepare your meal on a hot iron griddle right in front of you, is famous for its interactive and theatrical presentation.
