After 5 days in Oman, it was time to visit my country number 98—Qatar! Most people know Doha for the giant yellow teddy bear at Hamad International Airport, but there is so much more to explore beyond the airport. This 3-day Doha itinerary covers the city’s must-see attractions, making it perfect for first-time visitors.

Qatar, a small yet influential country on the Arabian Peninsula, is known for its remarkable blend of tradition and modernity. Bordered by Saudi Arabia and surrounded by the Persian Gulf, Qatar has rapidly transformed from a pearl-diving hub into one of the wealthiest nations in the world, thanks to its vast natural gas and oil reserves.

The capital city, Doha, is a vibrant metropolis that perfectly reflects this evolution. Towering skyscrapers line the West Bay skyline, while cultural gems like the Museum of Islamic Art and the bustling Souq Waqif showcase the country’s rich heritage. Doha is also recognized as a global hub for business, sports, and culture, having hosted major events like the FIFA World Cup 2022. With its luxurious hotels, world-class dining, and stunning desert landscapes, Qatar offers travelers a dynamic experience that seamlessly combines Arabian traditions with futuristic innovation.

FAQs for 3 days in Doha itinerary

1. Do you need a visa for Qatar?

Qatar has a welcoming visa policy for many nationalities, making it easy for travelers to explore the country. As an Australian passport holder, you can enjoy a visa-free entry to Qatar for up to 30 days. This entry can also be extended for an additional 30 days if you decide to extend your stay. The process is seamless—there’s no need to apply in advance. Simply present your passport upon arrival at Hamad International Airport (DOH), and you’ll receive a visa waiver stamp. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry, and you may be asked to show proof of accommodation and a return or onward flight ticket.

For travelers from other countries, Qatar offers various visa options, including visa-free entry for select nationalities, visa on arrival, and the convenient Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for those who meet specific criteria. Always check Qatar’s latest visa requirements online before traveling, as policies may change.

2. How to get to Qatar?

Traveling to Qatar is convenient and accessible, thanks to its strategic location and excellent flight connections. I was solo traveling in Oman before, so I flew directly from Muscat to Doha with Qatar Airways, the country’s award-winning national carrier known for its exceptional service and comfort. The flight was smooth and efficient, with stunning aerial views of the Arabian Gulf during the short journey.

In addition to Qatar Airways, many other regional and international airlines operate flights to Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha, one of the most modern and luxurious airports in the world. Airlines such as Oman AirEmiratesEtihad, and budget carriers like Air Arabia and Flydubai offer regular flights to Doha from major cities across the Middle East and beyond. Depending on your starting point, it’s worth comparing flight options online for the best deals and schedules.

If you’re already traveling within the Gulf region, Qatar is also accessible via road from Saudi Arabia through the Abu Samra border crossing, although this option is more suited for those on road trips or traveling by car. However, most international travelers find flying the most convenient and time-saving way to enter Qatar.

Whether you’re arriving for a short city escape or planning to explore the country’s vibrant culture and desert landscapes, flying into Doha is the easiest and most efficient way to start your Qatar itinerary.

3. How to go from Hamad International Airport to Doha Downtown?

Getting from Hamad International Airport to Doha’s vibrant downtown is both easy and affordable, with several transportation options to suit different travel styles and budgets.

  1. Doha Metro (Best for Budget Travelers):
The Doha Metro is the most efficient and budget-friendly option. The airport is directly connected to the city via the Red Line, which runs from the Hamad International Airport Terminal 1 station to key destinations in downtown Doha and beyond. Trains are fast, clean, and air-conditioned, with tickets costing as little as 2 QAR for a standard ride. The metro operates from 6 AM to 11 PM on weekdays and has extended hours on weekends.
  2. Karwa Taxis (Best for Comfort):
Karwa Taxis are the official taxi service in Qatar, offering a comfortable and convenient ride to downtown Doha. Taxis are available 24/7 outside the arrivals terminal. Fares start at around 25 QAR (airport pickup fee) plus 1.6 QAR per kilometer. The ride to downtown typically takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. Make sure the driver uses the meter, and you can pay in cash or by card.
  3. Uber and Careem (Best for App-Based Convenience):
Uber and Careem (the local ride-hailing app) operate widely in Doha and offer a more personalized experience. Prices are slightly higher than taxis but offer the convenience of cashless payments and ride tracking. You can easily book a ride via the app upon arrival.
  4. Airport Shuttle and Hotel Transfers (Best for Hassle-Free Travel):
Many high-end hotels in Doha offer complimentary shuttle services or private airport transfers. If you’re staying at a luxury hotel, it’s worth checking if this service is included. Alternatively, private transfer services can be booked in advance for a seamless journey into the city.

Yes, Doha is considered one of the safest cities in the world for tourists. Qatar as a whole has a very low crime rate, and the government prioritizes safety and security, making it an excellent destination for solo travelers, families, and first-time visitors.

Low crime rates

Violent crime is extremely rare in Doha. Petty crimes like pickpocketing or theft are also uncommon, especially in tourist areas. However, as with any destination, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and take standard precautions, especially in crowded places.

Solo female travellers

Doha is generally safe for solo travelers, including women. Qatar is a conservative country, so dressing modestly—especially in public places—is recommended to respect local customs. Solo female travelers usually feel safe exploring during the day and evening, but it’s advisable to use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem for transportation.

Respect for local laws and customs

Qatar enforces its laws strictly, and being aware of cultural norms is important. Public displays of affection, aggressive behavior, and public intoxication are not tolerated. Alcohol is available only in licensed hotels and bars, and drinking in public is illegal. During Ramadan, eating or drinking in public during daylight hours should be avoided.

Emergency services and healthcare

Doha has excellent emergency services. The police are approachable and helpful, and the emergency number is 999. Healthcare facilities are modern and well-equipped, making it a safe destination in case of medical emergencies.
